Ysleta Independent School District, Texas

The Ysleta area is near to the city of El Paso and was incorporated to a larger neighbor until the 1950’s. The name “Ysleta” was derived from the Indians who were residing in Mexico which was referred to as the “Isleta” Indians. The Isleta Indians was a pueblo Indian tribe that lived in the area of Mexico for thousands of years.
The Ysleta being a rural education district began in the 1930’s having a single high school and several middle as well as elementary schools
. The Ysleta Independent School District became one of the state’s major school districts having nearly 50.000 students and about 6,000 teachers, administrators and staff. The district’s 58 campuses are scattered through an urban area which stretches from Northeast El Paso up to the East and Southeast area of the city.
A decade ago, the Ysleta Independent School District operated on a state minimum achievement level. In the late 90’s, a major achievement was awarded to the district by the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills test also known as TAAS and named the YISD a “Recognized District” for students performance. In terms of having a high technology, the district is on its way on providing every teacher including the students an information gateway for internet researches, exchange and communication. |
