The Beaverton School District is located at the suburban area of Beaverton and Portland, Oregon. The school district covers 57 square miles of community with an estimated population of over 240,000. In the year 2005, the school district was able to take in approximately over 35,000 students making them the third largest school district in the State of Oregon.
With a total budget of $428 million last school year 2004 to 2005, the Beaverton School District was able to employ 2,016 teachers for its 31 elementary, 8 middle and 5 high schools. The school district also offers 22 option schools and programs and a Special Education program which takes in 4,000 plus students, or almost 12% of the total student population. Student population comprises mainly of Latinos followed by Asian Americans.
The Beaverton School District’s School Board which comprises of seven members is solely responsible for the educational program and policy making program of the school district. The school board holds regular meetings that are open to public to allow transparency and opportunity for the community to share and open their educational issues concerning the school district. In a recent annual survey summary report, it was reported that the district needed to improve on bettering the climate of student feelings in terms of providing students the avenue for treating each and other student well; helping students find visible adult role models at schools; increase satisfaction with cafeteria meals and keeping the school restrooms cleaner and in better repair. |
