The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is a school district based in Oakland, state of California, USA. It provides education for the children living within the area. It has elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. It was built in the year 1900s.
The district has over 100 schools that include (59) elementary schools, (23) middle schools, (19) high schools which has (9) schools in alternative education, and (4) education schools for adults as well as education centers for early childhood. Approximately, there are 46000 students in kindergarten up to the 12th grade, 32000 students who are adults, and over 6000 employees. This district has experienced controversy regarding the “Ebonics”. It is when the school board of Oakland Unified School District had stated that Ebonics or “African-American Vernacular English” is genetically based and not somehow connected with English.
OUSD has famous graduates. Hollywood actors like Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks are among them. NBA stars like Bill Russell and Gary Payton also studied in OUSD. Tom Hanks had thanked a teacher in one of the schools in the district during his speech at the Oscar’s. The name of the teacher is Rawley T. Farnsworth. Tom Hanks had donated over a hundred thousand dollars to the “Skyline Performing Arts Department”, which he once attended. |
