The Los Angeles Unified School District or the LAUSD in Los Angeles, California is the second largest school district in the United States, after the New York City Department of Education. In 2005, Los Angeles Unified School District was able to take in over 710,000 students and is also considered the largest public school system in California. The school district covers the entire Los Angeles area and extends to several few adjoining Southern Californian cities. Being such a large school district, it employs over 74,000 employees and their very own police department which was started in 1948.
The LAUSD is currently running a controversial ambitious renovation program that will help in covering up issues surrounding the school district such as: extremely crowded schools, poor maintenance and incompetent administration. This renovation program aims to construct, expand and refurbish over 160 schools by the year 2012.
Prior to being the Los Angeles Unified School District in the late 1960’s, there was once the Los Angeles City School District that served K – 8th and the Los Angeles High School District provided for 9 -12. Now, the LAUSD have 439 schools operating on the traditional calendar and 219 year-round schools where about47% of the student population is enrolled in. Like almost any other school district, LAUSD is also governed by a seven member School Board headed by a Superintendent appointed by the Board of Education. |
