The Houston Independent School District, the largest school district in all of Texas with over 209,000 students is also the seventh largest in the United States. The District encircles most of the entire greater Houston area covering 300 square miles of land and takes in students from the majority of the Houston area including the cities of Bellaire, West University Place, Southside Place, and taking small portions of Harris County in the Missouri City, areas north of Market street in Jacinto City, areas of Buffalo Bayou in Hunters Creek Village and Piney Point Village and also a small part Pearland.
The HIS District is also known to be the one of the largest employers in Houston since it has to employ over 30,000 people to manage over 300 campuses. It was founded in the 1920’s and replaced the Harrisburg school District. Due to the vast scope of land area that HIS District covers, it originally had 13 administrative regions but eventually cut down to five geographic regions by 2005. The five regional offices; North, East, South, West and Central regions are each being managed by a Regional Superintendent and a team of experienced school principals and officials.
Recently, the HIS District was able to shelter and enroll a large number of Hurricane Katrina victims thus even increasing the number of enrollees.
