Shawnee Mission School District is located in northeast Johnson County, Kansas USA. It is one of the major school districts in the whole Metropolitan Area in Kansas City. It consists of five high schools, seven middle schools, thirty-nine elementary schools and three instructional centers. Its student population is about 30,000 while the number of faculty staff is about 4,000. The school district serves the cities of Fairway, Leawood, Merriam, Quivira, Mission, Lenexa, Mission Hills, Overland Park, Westwood, Mission Woods, Roeland Park, Prairie Village, Shawnee and Westwood Hills.
The McAuliffe Elementary School is one of the schools within the district. It was the first school in the country to be named in honor of Christa McAuliffe. 70 percent of the teachers have either master’s degree or higher.
The graduation rate in this school district is more than 90 percent. It has a pupil-teacher ratio of 17.4 for elementary and 19.2 for secondary levels. The employees of this school district attend workshops, seminars and teacher-training programs in order to continually improve the quality of education that they give to their students. This school district is accredited by the Kansas and north Central Association. This school district has received numerous honors and awards. The latest awards the school district received are state titles in tennis, swimming and diving.
