The Lake Washington School District #414 is a high-performing public school district located between Lake Washington and Cascade Mountains to the east of Seattle. It is the fifth largest school district in Washington serving a student population of 23,476 coming from the communities of Kirkland, Redmond, Sammamish and southern portions of Bothell and Woodinville covering 76 square miles of land. The school district was established in September 1944 after the three small school districts of Juanita, Kirkland and Redmond were merged into one.
In 1967, the district School Board adopted a policy of naming new elementary schools from a list of deceased persons famous for their work in science, humanities, letters or education.
The district now comprising of 29 elementary schools, 12 Junior high schools and 7 high schools is led by a five member group of volunteer board of directors elected by the citizens of Washington to serve four-year staggered terms of office. Beginning 2003, the district’s Board of Directors moved and held their twice- monthly public meetings during the evenings to make better attendance from community members and ultimately promote a better understanding and participation in the development of the school district. The school district boasts of a rich historical background and development of over 60 years that has led them to earn academic excellence and recognition from various media groups and governmental institutions. |
