San Jose Unified School district is located in San Jose, California USA. It serves a total of 4,400 students. This school district has 6 elementary schools and two middle schools in the greater San Jose, California area. It is named after the “Union Army” in order to express the loyalty of the residents. It was established in the year 1863 during the American Civil War. It is not a “union school district”. The first school is designed to portable. It’s pulled from one ranch to the other by horses. The school at that time moves twice in one night to accommodate the growing demand for education.
A “permanent” school was established in 1873 on a land donated by Christopher Schofield. It is a traditional one-room school surrounded by pines and oaks. This so-called “permanent school” was replaced in 1914. It is a larger structure which is now the school district’s administrative offices.
The sudden decline of birth rates in the 1970’s resulted to closing down some of the schools within the school district. It was a tough decision because all the schools were considered outstanding. Today, San Jose Unified School District students score 2.5 percent on average in state achievement exams. |
