The Long Beach Unified School District situated in Long Beach, California was established in 1885 and is now cited as one of the America’s finest school systems. The school district has won several awards as a national model of excellence and was recognized as the winner of the $500,000 Broad Prize for Urban Education in the school year of 2003-2004. It is the third largest school district in California and was featured by several national news media such as Good Morning America, NBC’s Today Show and CNN because of their high standards in dress, behavior and achievement.
The school district started off with a few dozen students gathering under borrowed tents and trees and now covers for the educational services of almost 90,000 students in 93 public schools within Long Beach, Signal Hill, Lakewood, Paramount, and Avalon and Two Harbors on Catalina Island.
The Long Beach Unified School District was also pioneer in mandating students from Kindergarten through eight grade to wear uniforms; requiring students to attend summer and college preparatory courses; and end social promotion. Through these reforms and strict strategies; the school district came out with record attendance and lowest absenteeism and local schools meeting and exceeding state targets for academic growth. |
